I have heard of Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenue
Well, today some of us senior missionaries went to Washington DC via the subway,to see the Cherry blossoms and to take a tour of the National Museum of Modern Art. One of our seniors was a docent for the museum and gave us a VIP tour. It was wonderful. I normally don’t care to spend too long a time in art museums, but when you get the inside story on the paintings, it makes a big difference. I have included some pictures, but believe me, all of them were beautiful.

This painting depicts a man in the water being rescued after a shark bit off his leg. He was an orphan, no family, and very poor. After he was rescued, he learned to live without his leg. He ended up owning many stores and became a very wealthy man. He had this picture put in the schools so that they could see that you can overcome anything and become whatever you want.
If you ever saw the movie “Glory” you will understand when I say that this is a painting of the black soldiers and their leader (played by Matthew Broderick in the movie).

After the art museum we went to the Jefferson Memorial to see the cherry blossoms. Well, it was little bit too soon. Because of the cold weather, not many of them had come into bloom yet. But, what we were able to see was beautiful. The Jefferson Memorial was awesome. It was almost spiritual. What a great man. Trivia: Jefferson is facing the White House; Lincoln Memorial (which we didn’t get a chance to see this trip) is facing the State Capital. Anyway, I was able to see the White House across the Potomac. The picture doesn’t show it very well.

After that we went to the Museum of Natural History. I had already seen it at our last trip to Washington DC in August, but it was still very interesting.

We left on the subway and finally got home around 6:30. A long, but full of interesting things day.
