We went through Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey to get to New York by bus! The ride was so-so,
but the company was great!
The Nickersons, Kunz and Sister Jones were just plain as excited as I was, and of course, we all kept the excitement going.
Well after we got off the 3.5 (yep, 3 and a half hours on a bus
), we hailed our first cab ride on 34th street right which is right across the street from Macy’s where Miracle on 34th Street was filmed.
Kinda exciting.
Our first view of New York was tall buildings and tons of people and traffic.
We went to our hotel which was the Roger Smith Hotel on Lexington. It was nice to finally get kind of settled.
Again, there were TONS of people. I have never seen so many people in my life in one place. We started off by finding a New York hotdog stand so we could have a regular NYC lunch! The buildings we passed were huge.
This is what we did most of the time – looked up! After that we went to find the NY Subway by going through Grand Central Station.
After figuring out what line to take we got our tickets.
There were many street entertainers to watch as we walked through the subway.
Yep, he’s playing about six instruments at one time. . . The ride was crowded and typical – which is what we wanted, a real NY experience!
Next we rode on the Staten Island Ferry across the river to see The Statute of Liberty.
It is majestic! Also, next to the statue is Ellis Island
. Roy’s grandparents came through Ellis Island straight over from Ireland. We would love to find their names on the sign in sheets – some day.
After we got off the Staten Island Ferry, we of course had to see the Bull which, I believe, is in front of the NYC Stock Exchange (?). There were TONS of people around him so I couldn’t get a picture of just us. The bull was a lot smaller than I thought he’d be, but hey, I got to see him!
Just one of the beautiful parks in the city.
We ate at the best deli in New York – Carnegie Deli. I have never eaten a better pastrami sandwich in my life. We found out that they only accepted cash AFTER we were done. Good thing we had plenty. A note, you will need cash in New York more than credit cards . . . at least we did.
We took a walk through Times Square. That was a trip in itself!
On our way to the Broadway area we passed Radio City Music Hall. We though we’d take a picture of what real Rockettes look like . . .
Friday evening we saw Jersey Boys. The music was so much fun! It was all 1965 music which is my era. The only bad part was I kept falling asleep and the language was a bit much. Bryan, our son, told us that the language was bad but that was just they way they talked in New Jersey.
We came out of the show and walked through Times Square. It was full of people and energy. We even saw ourselves on the big screen – Awesome!
